This is attributable to a number of factors but one of the most concerning is the escalation of juvenile involvement in gangs. Perpetuated by the crime ridden neighborhoods many Baltimore youths are forced to grow up in, juvenile gangs become a means of escape and provide a perception of protection. By joining gangs juveniles are taking what appears to them to be a logical step to better their fate in life. To understand how these individuals could make such devastating choices we must understand that theirs is a life of devastating poverty and extreme hardship, a life which bears little resemblance to that most of us in mainstream America have come to expect and gangs offer them a chance to overcome some of the problems that confront them every day of their lives. This offer is, of course, replete with many problems. Gangs in reality offer no solution for these problems but instead only serve to escalate them. Consider, for example, the downward spiral ridden by two gang member of the so-called "Lexington Terrace Boys" who gained national attention in their federal death penalty trial in the U.S. District Court in Baltimore. Michael L. Taylor and Keon D. Moses started off like any other child in their crime ridden housing development. They took the only option that seemed available to them in order to survive. That option was joining a gang, a gang that some describe as: "a neighborhood crack cocaine operation that authorities portray as as much a killing club as a drug ring" (Gibson, 2004). ...
