often than not, there are reports about Israels ongoing battle against Palestine, a verbal barb flung between Saudi Arabia and Iraq or some kind of discussion between Egypt and Lebanon. As exotic and distant as this land seems, however, it has held some influence on the world stage; acting as a staging ground during the Cold War of the 1950s and 1960s and being the source of oil and energy. This paper will define the Middle Easts importance to the rest of the world, particularly in the area of geography. As an aside, the area that will be discussed in this has been referred to both as the "Mid-East" and the "Middle East," for purposes of this paper, these two terms will be used interchangeably. Before defining the Mid-Easts importance to both the United States and the rest of the world in terms of geography and other areas, its important to know where, exactly, the nations comprising the Middle East are located. When one thinks about the Middle East, what likely first comes to mind are Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Some of those who are students of this area would also throw Iran, Iraq and Jordan into the mix. All of these nations - and others - are part of the Middle East. According to the definition provided by the Fifth Edition of The Columbia Encyclopedia, the Middle East is a "term traditionally applied by western Europeans to the countries of southwest Asia and northeast Africa lying west of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. Thus defined it includes Cyprus, the Asian part of Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, the countries of the Arabian peninsula (Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait), and ...
