of these movements was the womens suffrage movement in Britain. It can be said that the view and representation of women in post-war Britain varied greatly from the perspective they
were given prior to the war. After 1945 the British economy did not enjoy the economic bloom that some of the other countries did following the war. A pre-war slump
in the economy did not right itself after the war as experts had hoped, but rather continued its slide downward(Grant, 1989). Grant(1989) also states that it was the strength of
the economies in the other countries that buoyed the British economy and living standards and so the decline was not readily noticeable by the average British citizen. However, those who
studied the trends closely, knew otherwise. In short, Britain was bankrupt after the war. Having been a major power among industrialized nations, she was having a hard time repairing
her infrastructure, it can be said, let alone offering to aid her neighbors in any of their reparations. This, as one can imagine, caused great social unrest and Churchill was
voted out. The Labour government, in an attempt to save their country from ruin, federalized gas, water and electric companies, as well as medical facilities(Britain Since 1945, 2002). Another thing
that dragged Englands economy and drained her resources were the many and varied territories she claimed abroad. Faced with the demise of their own country, or dismantling the empire, they
chose to release many of their territories from British rule. This loss of territories and the loss of industrialized power and status left Britain searching for a new identity.
