The House of Bernarda Alba is set in Spain around the turn of the century. Albas husband has died and she has summarily declared that she and her five daughters will observe a severe period of mourning for eight years, in which time none of them are to leave the house. Six women locked together for eight years. Of course, it doesnt take that long before the tensions begin to build. The three middle sisters, Magdalena, Amelia, and Martirio are worried because they have learned that a young man is interested in their oldest sister, Augusias. They think, however, that he is interested in her only for her money. Nonetheless Augustias determines to wed. Tensions flare when it is discovered that this man, named Pepe Romano, has been seen climbing out of the youngest daughters window. When Albas paid servant, Poncia, confronts Adela, Adela vows that she will continue the affair and that indeed, Romano is only marrying Augustias for her money. Poncia does not reveal this secret to anyone at first, hoping that Adela will give it up once Agustias is married. Poncia warns Bernarda that the women are going crazy being locked up as they are and that she must relent on her mourning period. Bernardo refuses to believe that she has lost control of her house and ignores Poncias warnings. One of the middle sisters follows Adela outside one night as she is meeting with Romano. When she sees what is going on she alerts the entire household. Adela is defiant to her mother, breaking her cane and declaring that she is through ...
