specific noun a pronoun is replacing, the meaning of a sentence can easily become completely jumbled -- often with ludicrous results. Consider this example offered by Leslie Blake, "If the
baby does not thrive on raw milk, boil it" (Blake 114). Since "baby" is the subject of the sentence, the use of the pronoun becomes quite gruesome. Obviously, the
speaker meant to say that the milk should be boiled. However, consider what might have occurred in a sentence where the meaning is not absurd. Misunderstanding could clearly have
resulted, which demonstrates the need for clarity in pronoun use. The following examination of pronouns takes a traditional analytic approach because of the importance of clarity in pronoun usage, and
the traditional approach to English structure emphasizes the importance of this point. The traditional approach to English structure uses a system of grammar that classifies words according to specific categories,
i.e. noun, adjective, preposition, pronoun, etc. (Introduction/Functional Model). This classification system is commonly referred to as the "parts of speech." In this approach to English structure, the part of speech
are defined semantically, i.e. "a noun is the name of a person, place or thing," a verb describes action or states of being (Introduction/Functional Model). Traditional grammar, in
