them ("Earliest known history of Vietnam," 2007). In 1857, Napoleon would invade France in part due to the missionaries, but also due to trade concerns ("Earliest known history of Vietnam," 2007). The French had taken over this country and imposed a western style administration on the new colonies, and this left the old Vietnamese administration powerless ("Earliest known history of Vietnam," 2007). Through the 1930s, all important positions were filled by people from France ("Earliest known history of Vietnam," 2007). It seems that after being taken over by the French government, little identity from the original Asian rulers had been left. Everything was new and this was largely due to the Napoleonic fervor that swept Europe for a time. Still, Vietnamese colonies would stick for some time before the Vietnamese would declare independence. Communism would enter the picture. During 1941, Ho Chi Minh formed something called the League for the Independence of Vietnam and this was a group that would later be called Viet Minh ("Earliest known history of Vietnam," 2007). After the second world war, the Viet Minh were able to take Hanoi and Bao Dai, the Vietnamese emperor who was in office at the time, abdicated and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was born ("Earliest known history of Vietnam," 2007). In 1946, it was all agreed that Vietnam would be independent ("Earliest known history of Vietnam," 2007). The French would withdraw their troops over a period of time ("Earliest known history of Vietnam," 2007). But things took a wrong turn. In 1946, the French attacked again as the negotiations between Vietnam and France did not resolve certain issues ("Earliest known history of Vietnam," 2007).
