became the most sweeping revolution in the history of art -- Impressionism. He brought to art a previously unused, yet very simple form of visual experience -- the glance. As
it defines the artists main goal., the term impression signified the sensory information that registered on the retina of the eye prior to any sort of thought (Stuckey, 36). Ones
eye, for example, sees tiny black spots before it recognizes them as faraway pedestrians. For Monet and his colleagues -- artists such as Cezanne, Degas, Pissarro, and Renoir -- the
basic truths of visual experience could be best recognized with a glance.This visual first impression was at odds with the accepted idea at the time that great art should address
eternal truths. For these artists, trying to represent the subject of this glance, this sensory impression, posed an impossible challenge. There was a discrepancy between the instantaneous moment required for
perception and the longer time necessary to actually paint what had been perceived in that first glance (Osmond, 98). For the Impressionist artists, their work became predicated on painting with
unprecedented speed, and using skipping, flickering brushstrokes which revealed unexpected abstract rhythms and harmonies. While originally criticized for being childishly unskilled, the fleeting first impression nature of Impressionist brush-work eventually
led the way to new forms of automatic and purely abstract painting (Stuckey, 36). If the Impressionists opened the door for new techniques in art, modern artists pushed for even
more change. When artists in the modern movement began to paint abstract pictures (pictures that were not realistic), it was not well received by the public, but as people eventually
