in Biran, Cuba on August 13, 1926. Angel Castro y Argiz, his father, was employed by the sugar industry in Cuba and his mother, Lina Ruz Gonzalez, cooked for sugar
industry officials (Pritchard 1). During his childhood, Castro endured ridicule from other children because his parents were not married and also because he was not baptized into Catholicism until the
age of eight years (Pritchard 1). He received his basic education at Catholic boarding schools and graduated from high school in Havana in 1945, at which time he entered the
University of Havana to study law (Pritchard 1). In his biography of Castro, Robert Quirk reports that as a child of seven, Castro was confused as to why he
was sent away from home to attend boarding school, "Had he caused too much trouble at home? the boy asked" (Quirk 3). When the other children ridiculed him. Calling him
a "Jew, because he had never been christened," young Fidel thought they were referring to a noisy bird that was known by that name (Quirk 3). Though his parents had
several children, Castro had 2 brothers and four sisters, his parents had never married and everyone at the school in Santiago, including the priests, made it clear that he would
