In fact, it can be argued that English language globalization may have a negative impact on the maintaining of local languages, including Farsi, also known as modern Persian. The greater question that is raised from this, then, is whether regional culture and language can survive the impacts of globalization. Students of language and researchers alike have considered the impact of English globalization on minority languages, including Farsi. Some have argued that minority languages like Farsi will not survive the economic, political and scientific impacts of globalization in light of international efforts to globalize English (Mongajemi, 2002). Because global development has led to a prevalence of English language programming in the mass media and in business development, communication technologies have enhanced the process of English language globalization, what some consider to be an enemy to "traditional cultures and languages" (Mongajemi, 2002). Farsi is one of approximately 6000 spoken languages worldwide, and falls into the category of "endangered" languages, languages that are increasingly being supplanted with English language or European languages (Mongejami, 2002). Though the cultures that speak Farsi, including the people of Iran, have struggled to maintain the rich dialects of modern Persian (Farsi) in light of considerable change and a diminishing of context through which Farsi can be maintained.
