Gail Sheehy first broke ground on this in her 1970s book Passages, and since then, everyone has clamored to but their own spin of the "appropriate" behavior for each phase of life. Its safe to say, however, that the originator of the phase of life was undoubtedly Sigmund Freud, who is also regarded by many to be the father of psychiatry. Although Freudian theory is no longer used much today in defining phases of life, it is good to examine his theory, and to determine the roots of todays experts. Freuds stages of development werent necessarily grouped by age, but rather by particular words that dealt with sex. Thus the "oral" phase was from birth to around 18 months; the "anal" stage was 18 months to 3 years; the "phallic" stage from 3-6 years; "latency" encompassing 6-12 years and "genital" moving from 12 years of age to adulthood (Freuds Stages of Development, 2002; see also Childhood and Sexual Evolution, 2002). Loosely defined, therefore, the oral stage is the time during which infants use their mouth and tongue to deal with anxiety (Freuds Stages of Development, 2002). This is also the time when an infant gains most of his or her pleasure from sucking and eating, as he/she cant do much else (Childhood and Sexual Evolution, 2002). The anal stage is the point at which children are starting to become aware of their own bodies, and they learn about muscle control in the bladder, rectum and anus and how it provides sensual pleasure (Freuds Stages of Development, 2002).
