a one-size-fits all type of incarceration, many feel that women are subjected to much harsher psychological trauma due to their treatment through the current systems. This paper will serve to
confront the existing standards by illuminating their shortcomings while offering some possible solutions for rehabilitation. Journalist Susan Nadler asked some of the same questions in her book, Good Girls
Gone Bad. She illustrates the underlying psychological drives which move women to commit crimes in the first place and why, as such, the existing attempts at rehabilitation do not work.
One of the glaring reasons, she states, is that most of the programs are women only programs, but are actually programs which were originally designed for use with male inmates(Nadler
1987). No criteria for addressing the special needs of women are addressed. The concerns of a woman are not the same concerns of a man, which none of the current
programs seems to address. Nadler reports that nearly ninety percent of the women in prison are there for substance abuse. Those crimes which fall under the violent crimes (including murder)
were carried out by women who had, had it with the system which had failed to protect them from an abusive spouse. Says Nadler, "Females can be aggressive, ready to
use the weapons of choice more typical of males, but sometimes their aggression is made through romantic gestures that they believe justifies what they do to others"(Nadler 1987). When compared
