that there is a conductor, the worker who keeps everything running and who is responsible for all the other workers in relationship to maintaining a smooth shift and running train. However, there is also the extra board conductor, a worker who is essentially on call whenever a conductor is in need of replacement. The following paper examines some articles that help us understand the duties of the extra board conductor on passenger and freight trains. Extra Board Conductor In first looking at the role of the extra board conductor we look at something of a journal entry sent to a website, by someone who is an extra board conductor. He states, "A usual day on the railroad starts with the dreaded beeping of your pager. The number that starts out 1-888 is a sign that you better be prepared to go to work in 2 hrs" (Dettmers, 1998). In another article we see how the "ladder" works in terms of achieving conductor status.
