Now, however, with the ubiquity of technology constantly increasing, the vast majority of organizations are employing databases to improve their approaches to business and their ability to make strategic decisions. This paper will explore what databases are, and how they have been put to effective use at Rileys Records, a representative small business specializing in the sale of music. This paragraph helps the student provide an overview of what database systems are and how they are used. Computer systems are often referred to as "information technology" because the basic function of a computer is to manage information in a way that a human could not do un-assisted. A database is a tool for assisting this process, in that it acts as a system by which computers can record information, store it, and then access it at a future date when it will be useful to the user (Russell, 2010). For instance, Rileys Records makes use of a simple database system that stores customer information such as names and phone numbers, so that this customer information can be used to develop more effective marketing strategies (for instance, advertisements are mailed to all customers in the database periodically). Another database is used for Rileys Preferred Club, a group of customers who are afforded special monthly offers on the basis of their purchasing patterns (information which is stored in a database automatically at the point of transaction).
