The lower elementary teacher tells the class what they will be doing, leads students through the activity and then summarizes in terms that interest them what they have done. The upper elementary teacher likely will follow many of the same patterns, but also encourage students to summarize for themselves what they have learned. Projects increase in complexity and the length of time that they take to complete. A middle school teacher will remind students of an upcoming due date, while having talked about project components or even completing many of them during class time. A high school teacher may do the same, or s/he may extend to students slightly more freedom. A college professor? There may be no mention of a class project at any time during class meetings. If the project is explained on the syllabus and the syllabus provides a clear due date, then there may be no mention of the project in class at all. The wise student will have learned by the experience of his first twelve years that "spoon feeding" is a form of independence building and by college time constitutes a collective lesson that the student was supposed to learn for himself. Concrete Experience Not all recognize this collective and monumental lesson, of course: "High school teacher reminded me of that project until I was sick of hearing about it.
