A life forms adapt complex yet very efficient mechanisms for dealing with the forces around them. Since time began the first organisms on this earth were faced on a daily basis with the need to survive and to procreate. In order to survive against odds which were sometimes larger, faster, meaner, tougher, that it, a particular animal or plant would adapt different mechanisms to cope. Plants adapted mechanisms as well which allowed them a certain edge in the complex play of life. Some of these mechanisms were immediate like fleeing, others involved a much longer and complex series of events we call evolution. What has resulted is millions of organism, all of which have a particular niche in the overall ecology of the world. Although as humans we often have favorites, no one plant or animal stands out above all the rest in regard to its overall value to world ecology. Birds, insects, fish, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and even the lowly worms all deserve equal consideration as do our native species of plants, our crop plants, wild or propagated medicinals, and even our so-called weeds. Each has a definitive place in the worlds ecology. As our first example of the contention presented above, take the lowly insect. Although evolution has resulted in some total failures which ultimately became extinct, those that survived the testament of time have become some of the most beautiful and extraordinary creatures on earth.
