meaning, tracing its development from one language to another (Dictionary.com, 2003). The following etymological examination focuses on the word "well-being," its history and meaning within the English language. English
is a much younger language than its most basic predecessors, Greek and Latin. It evolved roughly 1500 years ago in Britain, after the disintegration of the Roman Empires presence in
the British Isles (Lewis, 1993). English developed from the various languages bought to Britain by the tribes of northern Europe, the Angles, Saxons and Jutes whose invasions began roughly around
500 AD. The period from 500 to 1100 AD is known as the Anglo-Saxon or Old English period in the languages development and the terms that English-speaking people use most
frequently in their conversation come from this period (Lewis, 1993). Walter (2001) defines "well-being" as "the state of being healthy." How this term came about for describing a
state of health can be identified by looking at the components of this term. One of the basic components in the word "well-being," that is "well," comes from the Old
English period (Etymonline.com, 2003). It derived from the Old English word "wel," which shares the same Germanic source as the Old English word "willan" (Etymonline.com, 2003). Walter (2001) points
out that because of this factor "well" and "will" are closely related. "Well" is one of the most versatile words in the English language, as it has over thirty
