The relationship between employer and employee represents the fundamental basis of every business. Effective business communication is an essential component in todays volatile commerce; without it, there can be little if any cohesion among employees, management and the objective both parties are working toward. In order to establish this basis of communication within the workplace, employers have to abandon their supervisory egos in exchange for an atmosphere of openness, encouragement and teamwork. For the most part, the concept of business communication - when implemented correctly -- can be the difference between a productive employee and one who cares little about his or her performance. Indeed, when communication is at its full potential, it can make the workplace a "model of teamwork" (Flynn, 1996, p. 16). It can readily be argued how unrestricted communication between employer and employee is akin to implementing the concepts of group dynamics throughout the workplace, inasmuch as the sense of connectiveness among a groups members can far outweigh any singular weakness that may be apparent in just one person. The roots of a tree may not be visible under normal conditions, yet if they are not tended to on a regular basis, this lack of attention will begin to break down the trees very foundation. Soon, employee problems begin to manifest in the form of high personnel turnover, absenteeism, uncooperative attitudes, impertinence toward both coworkers and superiors, as well as a general lack of teamwork (Eng, 1997).
