characters, many of whom work within a mine and a mining community. The following paper examines some of the characters and their political and social positions. Germinal All
of the characters who work in the mine, and their families as well, seem quite disgruntled about their lot in life, although they seem to meekly accept it in many
ways as well. This is how the story is set in the beginning anyway. They are simply struggling by, making ends meet sometimes, working and eating what little they have,
sleeping and then waking up to do it again. Their lives are constantly in danger and for the most part there really only appears to be one individual who is
obviously disgruntled enough to fight, or to formulate the beginnings of a fight. This individual is ?tienne. Just prior to Etiennes true decision to go down in the mines again
we see a slight stir in the workers as they are told they will be fined a monetary sum. "A low growl from the pikemen greeted these words. The force
of the system alone restrained them, that military system which, from the trammer to the head captain, ground one beneath the other...?tienne was, perhaps, most affected" (Zola 1: 5).
Etienne is one who has actively chosen to go back down into the mines, to support and encourage people to fight. "He did
not know, but he wished to go down again to the mine, to suffer and to fight. And he thought fiercely of those people Bonnemort had talked of, the crouching
