Electrolytes both affect and are affected by the volume of water in the body, as they are minerals that dissolve to ions in solution. Electrolytes Electrolytes may be positively-charged cations or negatively-charged anions. The major electrolytes of the human body are: * Sodium (Na+) * Potassium (K+) * Calcium (Ca--) * Magnesium (Mg++) * Chloride (Cl-) * Phosphate (HPO4--) * Sulphate (SO4--) * Bicarbonate (HCO3-) (Ross, 1999). Of these, sodium and chloride ions are the major electrolytes of interstitial fluid and blood plasma. Within cells, potassium and phosphate ions are the primary electrolytes (Ross, 1999). Sodium Not only does sodium fill a critical role in the function of muscles and neurons, it "is also of crucial importance in regulating fluid balance in the body" (Ross, 1999). Water "follows" sodium; it is for this reason that reducing sodium is a leading treatment for high blood pressure. When the individual reduces sodium intake, then water volume declines. Blood volume then declines to lower blood pressure in that there is less volume pressing against the walls of blood vessels. Sodium is a critical contributor to muscle function, however. It is an electrolyte operational external to cells so it is not directly involved in muscle function. Rather, its role lies in the "excitability of muscles and neurons" (Ross, 1999).
