As a means by which to address the concerns that had sprouted up throughout the previous decades, the country's officials decided to implement what was termed political machines: a well-oiled operation that, some feel, took advantage of immigrant labor workers and the rest of America. While these political machines were initially created in order for politicians to gain a more solid voter following, it also served to undermine the very integrity upon which America had been established. Indeed, the only people who stood to benefit from the outcome of political machines were the ones who held a significantly higher social status. Indeed, the only people who stood to benefit from the outcome of political machines were the ones who held a significantly higher social status. American politics had been on such a roll since the Jeffersonian era that it only seemed appropriate -- to the politicians, at least -- that the concept of political machines be utilized to aid those needed financial campaign support. "It is no coincidence that this was also the age of the rise of Americas industrial cities. In the preindustrial city, politics was left to the amateur; just as labor specialized in other ways with the rise of industrialism, politics emerged as a distinct and full-time professional pursuit" (Anonymous PG). Through these machines, local, state and national parties were able to collect such support through civil service assessments, financiers, public banquets, delegate taxes, meeting fees and private contributions. One of the most questionable tactics of these political machines, however, was the manner in which the politicians took advantage of immigrant workers, "who gladly exchanged their votes for jobs, Christmas turkeys, or election day payoffs" (Troy 14).
