have not been consistent in demonstrating these perceived effects. Additional controlled studies are needed to provide the empirical evidence needed to either support or negate the perception that there are
multiple benefits from parent involvement. This study will contribute data to fill that need. Problem Background If parent involvement really does enhance student motivation and self-esteem and improve
student achievement, then why dont all schools in the nation strive to have all parents involved in some way or other? It would seem that even more research is needed
on the question of whether or not parent involvement has positive effects for students. It is also possible that research needs to be narrow instead of broad. Studies within school
districts, for instance, would demonstrate to all local parents the effects of involvement in that specific community. Literature Review What is Parent Involvement Vandergrift and Greene (1992), observed that
the concept of parent involvement has changed and there are now two independent components: parents as active partners and parents as supporters. It is not adequate to approach parental involvement
from only one of these components. Some parents may be very active but they are not supportive while others may be supportive but not active in the school (Vandergrift and
Greene, 1992). The ideal parental involvement would be to have parents both supportive and active. In either case, supportive or active, parental involvement can mean totally different things, depending
