must determine how best to record observations or interview responses. Accuracy is, of course, paramount to the validity of the study. The researcher has a number of options for recording interviews and observations. One of the most frequent methods is field notes. These cannot just be helter-skelter notes, they need follow some rules. The researcher also needs to be discriminatory when recording notes. One researcher said that he "filled thirty-two notebooks with about half a million words of notes during nearly six hundred hours" (Cohen, Manion & Morrison 2007, p. 260). The notes must be complete enough so that the researcher is able to recall that observation months later (Cohen, Manion & Morrison 2007, p. 260). Some researchers choose to use audio recordings for interviews and others use video recording for observations or interviews. Opie (2004) reminds researchers to consider the amount of time they will have to review the recordings and asks if the researcher will really have time to transcribe the audio recordings (p. 120). Another factor is whether or not the respondent is willing to be tape-recorded (Opie 2004, p. 120). These cautions are beneficial if the researcher is using a structured interview method but if he or she is using an unstructured interview model, note-taking can be extremely difficult. These kinds of interviews require more note-taking, which can amount to pages and pages and also the very real chance of missing something (Opie 2004, p. 120). This is why some researchers opt to use a tape-recorder with unstructured interviews but use field notes with structured interviews (Opie 2004, p. 120). On the other hand, some researchers have said that note-taking even with unstructured interviews and complex observations helps them "fight the acute boredom that [is] sometimes felt" (Cohen, Manion & Morrison 2007, p. 261). ...
