kids are not working up to standard, one is hard pressed to come up with good things to say. Still, many Northeast or MidAtlantic schools usually compare favorably with educational institutions from the other parts of the nation. While things are bad in New York, they seem to be worse elsewhere and statistics back that up. In fact, New York City ranks "7th in the nation for having the largest proportion of public school 4th graders scoring at the highest two levels in reading in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)" ("Good News"). While New York City schools have many problems, there are some good things to report. One can see that New York City schools face challenges in part because of the vastness of the system. Most school systems around the nation are small in size or at least smaller than what comprises the New York City monstrosity. They boast a high school or two perhaps, but generally have small districts with only a handful of school. New York City has a vast amount of high schools, middle schools and elementary schools and so it requisites a lot of money. Unfortunately, New York City schools recently endured a $77 million budget cut (Klein). At the same time, the administration was able to cut some money elsewhere by streamlining administrative functions and by doing so, they were able to funnel $250 million into the classrooms (Klein). This is admirable. In addition to budgeting problems and solutions that seem to mend the deficits the city faces, the city has endured other high profile dilemmas.
