there came the advent of the printing press and then the idea of movable type and a whole new industry was born. Technology continues to match forward. In todays world, more and more people find their information on-line via the Internet, converse with each other via e-mail and do their shopping for nearly all commodities on the Web. This mass use of the Internet has had some limited effect on the printing industry, but the printing industry continues to adapt to the new technology. By adapting to the new technology and working with the new technology in an integrated manner, the printing industry continues to prosper. BACKGROUND In 1455 Johannes Gutenberg invented movable type and the way was paved for the mass production of printed materials in the form of magazines, newspapers and books (Marcuccio, 2000). In the years to come, printing shops and newspaper offices emerged all through Europe and eventually developed in the new world. Despite the passage of centuries, the method of reproducing the printed word had changed very little. Automatic typesetting was developed in 1886 with the invention of the Linotype machine (Marcuccio, 2000). Then after the Second World War, there were several important inventions which included the phototypesetting, which advanced the printing process and allowed daily newspapers, book and magazine publishers to establish better editing and faster turnaround time for their individual publications (Marcuccio, 2000). As a result of this advancement in technology, circulation was increased immensely at the turn of the 20th century. As the 20th century progressed, there was a paradigm occurring - the invention of electromechanical was slowing disappearing and was systematically being replaced with such inventions as computer chips and circuitry.
