(Park, 1997). The wave of industrialization did seem to spread from Japan to South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and then to Singapore during the 1960s and 1970s (1997). It has continued to the ASEAN-4 which are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand in addition to mainland China since the 1980s (1997). While the success is positive, it is also bittersweet. The fall of the baht in 1997 represented the start of an economic crisis in Asia, one so strong it was felt all the way from Thailand to Japan. Indeed, while many of these little countries were growing, the financial fall would have an effect on many of these and in some case, reverse the initial inklings of success. While one can say in a general sense, that there has been a great deal of progress in the region, fundamental questions linger. Parts of the Western Pacific Rim have done well, while other portions have not. It is important to note that this region of the world has, by and large, experienced unprecedented growth since World War II. At the same time, while some states have expanded, others have not. What explains the rapid economic development of some parts of the region and the relative stagnation of other areas? II. What is the Western Pacific Rim?
