arent nearly as funny when an earthquake rolls through, rattling dishes, breaking glass and knocking things over. This paper is an essay on how frightening an earthquake really is. Discussion Earthquakes, as most everyone knows whos ever watched PBS or the Science Channel, are caused when the earths tectonic plates slide against each other. Each of the continents and various land masses rests on one of this massive plates, which in turn floats on the magma in the earths interior. Where the plates meet there is a fault line, such as the notorious San Andreas Fault in California. The North American continent sits atop the North American Plate, while the Pacific Ocean rests on the Pacific Plate; the two are grinding past each other, the former moving south and the ocean plate moving north at infinitesimal speeds. Occasionally they get "stuck" and dont move at all, building up tremendous pressure. When the pressure gets to be too much for the plates to bear they move suddenly, releasing the tension in an earthquake. Scientists are trying to learn to predict earthquakes but as yet there is no reliable method for doing so. This is why earthquakes, unlike tornadoes, hurricanes or typhoons are so terrifying: they strike without warning and can do tremendous damage. At this point the student will want to consider an experience in an earthquake and what it was like; doing so they might write something like the following.
