The following examination of literature looks at how this amazing process occurs and the early syntactical developments in first language acquisition. Noam Chomsky maintains that an infants brain is already
"hardwired," so to speak, to learn language. This stance proposes that language learning during early childhood is part of a genetically programmed pattern of growth (Gliedman). But, just as heredity
and the effects of evolution shape the infant brain to learn language, human begins are only capable of learning languages that fall "within a relatively narrow range of logical structures"
(Gliedman). The human brain is designed to learn language during a sensitive period that occurs between six and twenty-four months of age (Voigt 144). Depending on the language that is
heard by the baby during this period, latent possibilities inherent in the brain structure begin to close off in favor of the abilities needed by a particular language. For instance
a baby that hears only Japanese loses the inborn ability to hear the difference between the "L" and "R" sound (Voigt 144). Chomsky asserts that the brain structure is modified
as a child adapts to the language requirements of the native environment (Gliedman). Animal studies verify his perception in that this body of research shows that the brains structure of
animals can be modified by environment. However, while language acquisition is associated with genetically determined factors, the rate at which a child learns language is also subject to environmental
