Froebels books, The Education of Man, which provided the foundation for early childhood education, and Mother Play and Nursery Songs, which laid the foundation for early literacy (Moore, 2002). Froebel loved the outdoors and he believed that young children would learn best through play (Watson, 1997). He also believed that early childhood, ages 3 through 6 were the optimal time in the childs life to play and learn (Moore, 2002). It was while he was on a hill looking at across the vista that Froebel coined the term kindergarten, which means childrens garden (Moore, 2002). Moore explains: "Froebel thought of the child as a tender flower and the school like a garden in which activities were planted and the teacher acted as a gardener" (2002, p. 15). Pestalozzis notion of object-teaching followed the premise that things should come before words, in other words, children should be given things to play with and explore (Moore, 2002). This led Froebel to give children blocks and other objects for sensory experience believing that language would be generated through these experiences (Moore, 2002). By holding an object learning would naturally occur (Moore, 2002). There are four components in Froebels philosophy of education: philosophy of education rested on four basic components: 1. Free self-activity, which sets the direction for development and allows children to become creative and to participate socially (Watson, 1997). 2. Creativity (Watson, 1997). 3. Social participation (Watson, 1997). 4. Motor expression is based on learning by doing instead of following the instructions of the teacher (Watson, 1997). Froebel left the school in 1844 to promote his ideas through Europe (Moore, 2002).
