The African Americans were just beginning to get a foothold on what freedom meant while still dealing with the racism of the past. Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Dubois were two of the most noted theorists of their time. While they had many similar ideas, they also differed on the way the problems should be handled. Part of this difference may be attributed to the difference in their upbringing. Washington was a former slave who knew the life first hand, and possibly had some remaining fear of white man, while DuBois studied the after effects of slavery and had no fear whatsoever. Different approaches with the same goal is what best describes the pair. Washington and Dubois both viewed American racism as a primary block to African Americans attaining equal lives in America. Washington believed that the problem stemmed from the habitual station of whites to blacks and often times was accused of being ineffectual as an AA advocate. Washingtons primary approach to the problems of his race was to be nice to the white oppressors and get to know them in order to prove that AAs were likeable and intelligent people. Only after his death was it realized that much of Washingtons attitude was more like the wolf tending the sheep in a sheep outfit. He knew that flat out anger and aggression would not serve any purpose; therefore being polite and congenial was the way to infiltrate and change the views. DuBois on the other hand did not believe the AAs had to pretend to like anyone just to be treated equally(Zook A8). In fact, he felt that to behave in such a manner only encouraged slavery ...
