Introduction Johnson (1990) appears outraged at the fact that Hedda Nussbaums battered state seems to have excused her liability in causing the death of her six year old adopted daughter. Many remember the Steinberg case which had become quite well-known due to the brutality associated with it. While Joel Steinberg battered Hedda and hurt their children, she allowed the abuse to continue. The case brings up a myriad of problems for society. What laws should be considered reasonable to protect children while not impinging on individual rights to privacy? Should doctors and police have more power to intervene? In 2001, they do. At least there is more attention to the issue, more laws to protect potential victims and a recognition that domestic abuse is both a familial and a societal problem. Unfortunately, that was not the case in the mid-1980s. II. The Lisa Steinberg Case Officer Vincent Daluise was the first on the scene when an emergency call had come to the police about six year old Lisa Steinberg (Gross, Powell & Daley, 1987). She had stopped breathing and her naked body revealed bruises (1987). Her brother lay nearby tied to a urine soaked playpen (1987). Lisa would eventually die of her injuries. It was another case of child abuse, but its appearance in the upscale neighborhood shocked the world. More would emanate from this case inclusive of long-term wife battering.
