Pojman may have made some mistakes in his reasoning. Do We Deserve What We Earn? Though Pojmans work deals with many
issues relating to merit and desert he ultimately focuses on deserts, or the condition of deserving one thing or another. Pojman (1999) argues in favor of an argument given by
another wherein Ross states that "it is intuitively obvious that the appropriate distribution of happiness and unhappiness should be according to virtue and vice" (93). While he makes many important
points the author also seems to be forgetting some very basic truths about life and humanity. He does not seem to take into consideration that some people, perhaps all people,
who are underprivileged are deserving of something as simple as a chance, whatever that chance may be. Underprivileged can refer to impoverished people, people who were raised in a vicious
and violent setting, people who have mental conditions, or people who are simply not the norm, as presented by Pojman. For example,
in Pojmans work he illustrates how people behave a particular way. "If someone treats us to dinner, gives us a present, teaches us a skill, rescues us from a potential
disaster, or simply gives us directions, we normally feel spontaneous graditude to our benefactors" (Pojman, 1999; 95). He assumes that all people wish to give back who are given to.
Likewise he indicates that "if someone intentionally and cruelly hurts us, deceives us, betrays our trust, we automatically feel resentment. We want to reciprocate and harm that person" (Pojman, 1999;
