On the other hand, Asians and even some Europeans believe strongly in metaphysical healing and have practiced it for thousands of years (Neddermeyer. 2005). Metaphysical healing usually involves the use of a medium, such as magnets, crystals or a variety of other elements. Some metaphysical healers believe there is a spiritual aspect involved in the healing while others do not. Spiritual healing has also been practiced since the beginning of time (Neddermeyer, 2005). We know of reports of healing by the Essenes in 200 B.C.; which is found in Jewish literature (Solfvin, 2000). The Essenes "were a mystical group known for their talent as healers (Solfvin, 2000). Neddermeyer (2005) states that the healing referred to in metaphysical healing is now "in keeping with all known traditional practices and what is beginning to be understood scientifically, is referred to as Energy Healing or Spiritual Healing." In the Ancient world, people believed in the connection between mind, body and spirit (Healing Rays, 2007). As science was developed, the emphasis shifted from the three aspects of a being to the physical and material (Healing Rays, 2007). Then the Catholic Church outlawed any healing performed outside of the Church itself and lay healers could be executed (Healing Rays, 2007). In 1951, the Church made spiritual healing legal again but it is still tarnished with those centuries of being illegal in the Church (Healing Rays, 2007). The result was that medicines advances omitted anything that was spiritual in nature (Healing Rays, 2007). Certainly, the greatest of all spiritual healers was Jesus Christ.
