In order to level the playing field, and allow minorities to assimilate and progress in society, one will want to see greater diversity in higher education. This is true in terms of both the student and faculty populations. While an important subject, it is not as if colleges do not pay attention to the problem. They do. In fact, many college campuses in the United States, have experienced both ethnic and racial diversity (Szelenyi). Actually, this is quite common today. Many university students find that they meet people of different racial and ethnic backgrounds for the first time when they leave their homogenous neighborhoods. Diversity does appear to be more present in society as a whole as well in modern America (Szelenyi). Although this is true, there is still concern about the lack of diversity. In many communities there are sections where people of different races, religions or ethnicities congregate. To some extent, this is only natural. People live next door to their family members at times and tend to like to live near people more like themselves with the same interests and attitudes. And while it is comforting not to be the only person of a certain ethnic background in a particular community, living in certain sections of town that are not diverse has drawbacks. It does not allow the sharing of the positive parts of assimilation. Thus, diversity on the college campus helps to integrate society and goes toward racial tolerance. Minorities are underrepresented when it comes to achieving degrees (Szelenyi). Within the realm of higher education in general, minority students tend to be less persistent and they are not as academically prepared when compared with white students (Szelenyi).
