a large percentage of the American population remains grossly overweight, According to a recent statistical study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one out of every five Americans is obese, which means he or she exceeds the recommended ideal body weight by at least 30 percent ("Obesity in America" 2). This concurs with an earlier National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which revealed in 1997 that it is not only older Americans who battle weight problems. Fourteen percent of American children, between the ages of 6 and 11 are overweight; as are 12 percent of adolescents, aged 12-17 years; and 35 percent of young adults, between the ages of 20 and 35 ("NHANES III Shows More Americans Overweight, Including Kids" 14). If Americans are preoccupied with weight issues and dieting, why is it that so many of them remain grossly overweight? The answer is in the types of dieting they select in combating their weight problems. There is, quite simply, a right and wrong way to diet. But if the dieter chooses the right way, and has a serious commitment to the necessary life-changing regimen, success can ultimately be achieved. For example, Rebecca West battled weight problems most of her life, and was taken by her mother to her first weight-loss center at age 10, when she already weighed 125 pounds (West and Cimons 116). By October of 1993, Rebecca West was tipping the scales at 263 pounds, and after seeing pictures of herself at her brothers wedding, she was jolted into making some serious life changes. As she recalled, "I began by introducing new eating habits: building my diet around cereals, salads, fruits, poultry and vegetables, and eliminating junk food, butter and whole milk. ...
