As defined in the online dictionary, it is designated a noun and the definition is as follows: "That quality of appearance which pleases the eye; beauty; comeliness; grace; loveliness" ("Word of the Day Archive," 2007). Another definition is simply stated as follows: "physical beauty" (Hayes, 2007, p.1B). The adjective of pulchritude is pulchritudinous ("Word of the Day Archive," 2007). Examples are provided in respect to how the term is used. One quote comes from the New York Times from Mitchell Owens and is as follows: "While other symbols of postwar pulchritude have gone into seclusion, become anti-vivisectionists or begun hawking designer eyeglasses, Gina Lollobrigida continues to tend her image with a fully sequined sense of responsibility to the legend " (Owens, 1995 as qtd. in "Word of the Day Archive," 2007). In that example, pulchritude is used in a different manner than the usual one. There, it is used as a synonym for beauty but rather than focus on a specific idea of beauty, it is aligned with a more general conception. It does not for example target a single person. It also does not reference a womans charm which is often the way it is used. For example, an author reviewing the Pussycat Dolls reality show had this to say: "Apparently, the theory is that the contestants pulchritude is enough to make this show interesting, so personality is not necessary. The theory proves distressingly wrong" ("Whats lewd, Pussycat?," 2007, p.D12). In this instance, the term is used to denote exceptional beauty and juxtaposes it against other elements that might make a show worthwhile.
