man who, in the beginning of the story, is dead. From there his story unfolds, taking us back to when he was alive, when he discovered he was dying, and
his eventual death. Ivan goes through many struggles as he faces his death, and in the end comes to some powerful realizations mere hours before his death. In the following
paper we examine the what Ivan Ilyich learned as he stared death in the eye. Ivan Ilyichs Life As mentioned, in the beginning of the story we see
Ivan dead. Those around him are acting as they should when a fellow worker or family member dies. However, they are all conditioned to do this. They are only providing
the appearances necessary in society. Inside each individual is wondering what they will do next, not really caring that Ivan is dead. In this respect we see how Ivan influenced
those around him, how the society that he lived in was one of appearances and one of great shallowness. This shallowness was clearly reflected in his children, whom he believed
that he had raised right. However, they were nothing but reflections of him, and what he learned about himself, his life, and his children, came only in the end. By
then the damage to his children had been done. And, perhaps the only hope for them was to arrive at the sense of enlightenment that Ivan only felt on his
death bed. One wonders, what was it that Ivan learned on his deathbed. Previously to that he has been combating the truth of his impending death at every turn.
Even in the last chapter, when he is close to dying, he has a raging crying fit. He does not want to see the truth that has been staring him
