This may be because David was known as a person with God very early in his life. He became King when he was 30 years old and served in that
role for forty years, Davids growth as a leader was emergent. He became an armor-bearer. He became part of Sauls house because he could play the harp. Scripture tells
us: "Whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would take his harp and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit
would leave him."1 It was Davids willingness to serve the king that opened doors for him and that allowed him to continue to develop as a leader. His military victories
also enhanced his reputation as a leader. But his successes and reputation in the towns began to irritate Saul. For instance, in 1 Samuel 18:6-8, we read that Saul and
David returned victorious over the Philistine and the women sang and danced saying: "Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands."2 As would be expected, Saul was
angry that the people thought David was a better warrior and said, "What more can he get but the kingdom?"3 Saul would subsequently stopped seeing David but everyone in two
nations loved him. But even this surprise anger from his king helped David grow as a leader because it taught him how to different kind of follower when he fled
to the wilderness. David was far from perfect. He sinned but went to God to repent. He was always trying to improve. This was evident from the beginning. He
