Educators must meet the challenge of diversity by preparing educators to address cultural instruction in such a manner that it encourages the learning of all students, no matter what their cultural background (Futrell, Gomez and Bedden, 2003). Fulfillment of this task requires that educators recognize that the way in which a teacher presents information is always mediated by culture, as culture is a term that encompasses all of our personal beliefs, ideas, values, assumptions and behaviors. Culture, in other words, provides the background that mediates between the individual and how reality is perceived. Therefore, therefore a teachers cultural orientation necessarily affects the way in which subject material is presented. Cultural mediation recognizes this fact and the "value-laden nature of teaching" (Parsons, 2003, p. 23). This examination of culturally mediated teaching explores literature on this topic and what this body of information indicates relative to how the teacher and the learner can go about the process of mediating culture in order to establish communication that informs and benefits both parties. This investigation will also endeavor to determine what research has indicated about how students from other cultures go about learning and how teaching strategies can be implemented from a cultural perspective in order to provide for the best possible learning outcomes. Cultural mediation originates from the multicultural education movement, which is a term that has had multiple meanings associated with various suggested pedagogies.
