Cultural differences can have both direct and indirect impacts on military operations. This is true in regard to the militarys battlefield functions as well as in regard to military operations other than war (MOOTW). Cultural intelligence can help lessen those impacts. Although some specifics of cultural intelligence have changed rather radically in just the past few decades, many of the basic tenets remain the same. To support the contention presented above, it is appropriate to first consider cultural intelligence as it existed in the Cold War era. Even as late as the 1990s cultural intelligence was limited essentially to very basic profiling. Today, however, we find ourselves having to work more carefully and strenuously to achieve our job function of collecting information and effecting interference with our enemies operations (Carroll, 2005). Todays cultural intelligence personnel must be prepared to more thoroughly explore the cultural factors that impact military operations. In an article written in 1998 and published by the Army News Service one staff sergeant assigned to the Armys counterintelligence units emphasized that agents deal with people and therefore: "maturity and a keenness to human nature as well as being good at interviewing and having good report writing skills" (Army News Service, 1998). Interestingly, ethnic and cultural diversity can become a plus as counterintelligence units are now emphasizing the recruitment of a more diverse group of employees (Colorlines, 2003).
