Meininger, Reyes, Liehr, Chan and Mueller (2003) sought to expand the populations in which The State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI) has been shown to be useful. The STAXI is a reliable and valid self-report questionnaire that has shown good results when used "among African and European Americans aged 13 years and older" (Meininger, et al., 2003; p. 2). The instruments usefulness "among adolescents younger than 13 years and Hispanic American adolescents" (Meininger, et al., 2003; p. 2) had not been tested, however, and the researchers sought to assess the STAXI among all three groups, giving special attention to the Hispanic teens. The authors used stratified quota sampling techniques to select a sample of 394 public school students aged 11-16 years in Houston. The authors found similar results between older and younger Hispanic children, with results from the 11-13 year group being greatly similar to those obtained from the 14-16 year group. In terms of internal consistency, there were no significant differences among the three ethnic groups, though "Ethnicity and age had statistically significant main effects on the anger scales" (Meininger, et al., 2003; p. 2). Emotions and Health The authors conclude that the anger-in scale of the STAXI may be less reliable for younger groups but that it is still valuable for assessing anger psychometrics in adolescents.
