Case 1 In this case scenario, a 35-year-old womans husband has committed suicide and she is distraught, concerned about her circumstances and coping with the emotional reaction to this event. James (2008), citing Resnik, indicates that crisis intervention in the case of suicide should take place within the context of three phases. The first phase, resuscitation, should occur within 24 hours of the suicide and consists of the crisis workers offering the survivors aid in coping with their "initial shock, grief, anger and most likely self-recrimination, guilt and blame" (James, 2008, p. 206). This phase of intervention may take up the first several weeks after the death and, during this time, survivors are encouraged to explore the "full range" of their feelings associated with the suicide, telling "the story as many times as it needs to be told" (James, 2008, p. 206). As this indicates, James (2008) feels that, in the vast majority of cases, suicide survivors have a need to describe what happened, as they sort out their emotions and reactions to their current circumstances. However, experts also advise that the crisis worker dealing with grief counseling should tailor intervention to fit the unique experience of the client (Worden, 2009). Particularly since a common reaction of Western societies to suicide is shame, survivors may initially feel reluctant to describe the circumstances of the suicide, as well as details, such as a suicide note.
