But global demographic, political, and economic changes and massive immigration have sparked new scholarly and policy interest in cultural diversity and change within nations" (Cooper at al, 1998, pp. 559-584). Psychopathology addresses the issues of behavioral and psychological dysfunction as they relate to social disorganization; cognition refers to the process of knowing, which applies to a combination of judgment and awareness; social psychology studies various components of attitude, motivation, personality and behavior as they reflect an individuals influence upon and by social groups; development pertains to "personal exploration" (Cooper at al, 1998, pp. 559-584) as it relates to gender role, occupation, ethnicity, religious beliefs, political ideology and relationships with peers, family and strangers. "Although themes of shared values, beliefs, and behaviors that are transmitted through generations are common, some scholars emphasize cognitive orientations to ideas, beliefs, and knowledge; others focus on materialist orientations to technological and environmental features; and others concentrate on behavioral orientations or on moral themes" (Cooper at al, 1998, pp. 559-584). The student might surmise the technique most applicable to all populations as being the concept of behavioral therapy, which takes into consideration the history of cross-cultural psychology by assessing culture as an "indispensable component in the understanding of human behavior" (Segall et al, 1998, p. 1101).
