The impact of corporations on the environment is absolutely huge, and to disregard their contribution in terms of disposing of hazardous materials is to seriously underestimate their impact. Therefore, any discussion of hazardous waste must include corporations and any discussion of corporations must include the aspect of social responsibility. Imagine just what would happen if corporations were not socially responsible. Sadly, there are far too many examples of just this problem. The ramifications include everything from polluting water sources to dumping toxins which cause entire communities to become sick or experience extremely high rates of illness or cancer. Clearly, this is a serious matter. Therefore, it is important to discuss the issue of social responsibility for corporations because the need for this discussion is only growing. As this becomes more and more a global economy and as we live with more and more corporations in our midst, the effects of these corporations not acting in socially responsible ways is far too severe. We must consider these issues in order that they may be addressed before the next generation has to deal with the ill effects of not addressing them. Hazardous Waste - The Problem The 1970s and 80s were a time when the U.S. first started to realize the effects of corporate irresponsibility from the past (Hazardous Waste, 2002). It was during this era that the impact of uncontrolled corporate behavior was realized for its full devastation (Hazardous Waste, 2002).
