age. They can have bright orange and red blotches that are outlined in black and then have a background color of faded orange and yellow. They are very bright colored and this is why many people like to keep them as pets because they are so pretty (Reptiles in the Green, 2006). It is also said that they get their name, Corn Snake, because they are bright like Indian Corn (Reptiles in the Green, 2006). The Corn Snake lives in a large portion of the United States. They range from "Southern New Jersey through Florida and west to Louisiana" (Oakland Zoo, 2006). They climb on things like trees and also move across the ground too. They can be seen in open areas or in the woods and can often be "found in trash piles and abandoned buildings" (Oakland Zoo, 2006). But, the Corn Snake is also very secretive and hides well. They are active at night and stay hidden under things in the day time. They normally grow from 3 to 5 feet long and eat a variety of animals. Although they are reptiles they are also considered carnivores because they eat meat (Corn Snake Fact Sheet, 2006). The animals they eat are small rodents like mice and moles, bats, lizards and even small birds (Oakland Zoo, 2006). They kill and eat their prey by constricting them which means they do not bite to kill, but bite to get a hold of their prey. Then the snake wraps itself around the animal and squeezes until the animal is dead and then they swallow their meal.
