While Confucius lived in the fifth and sixth centuries B.C., Socrates died just before the birth of Confucius, living in the fourth and fifth centuries B.C. Alexander the Great lived in preceding century between 356 and 323 B.C. Each of the above three men would make numerous contributions to civilization. Confucius is remembered as being both the first and the most renown great Chinese philosopher. He in fact is the founder of Chinese literature (Owen, 1997). Although he was he son of a magistrate in what is present day Shandong, his father would die when he was very young and he would be raised by his mother in great poverty (Douglas, 1992). After a brief stint as a government official during his younger years he would resign from government duty and begin teaching. He would become very popular, attracting many disciples. He would reenter public office when invited to do so at the age of fifty (Douglas, 1992). He would briefly serve as magistrate then be honored with assignment to the highest post in the state which could be obtained by a commoner such as himself (Owen, 1997). In his new post Confucius would quickly find himself in opposition to the ruling nobility and would be exiled from his homeland for thirteen years. During this time he traveled extensively within China pursuing his teaching. Finally at the age of sixty-seven he was allowed to return home but he would die within the year. Even in death, ...
