We as a group, or even individuals might feel more comfortable if we could put a reason behind some of these mass killings of the 18 months , but when one begins to lop of the reasoning head of this murderous hydra, another head-another reason --quickly appears, more difficult or at least less clear than the last. If this can be said for the reasons of such actions, the same is equally true for the possible solutions, or methods to avoid repeat performances of these grisly events. Senior Editor of Newsweek (1999), Howard Fineman, writes, "The shooting victims of todays headlines are not distant leaders, but schoolchildren and office workers" ( 26). Not that that makes any more sense to any of us. Perhaps it is that we have in the back of our minds that persons in positions of power live more dangerous lives than we do. Now at the forefront of media and our minds, we find students and adults killed in Pelham, AL, Atlanta, GA, Illinois, Indiana, Conyers, GA, Salt Lake City, UT, Washington DC, Springfield, OR, Jonesboro, AR, Paducah, KY and Pearl, MISS - in less than two years time. Although it remains interesting to consider the motivations of these killers, it would almost seem that figuring out "why," may be a luxury that we no longer have time to afford. A recent study (1998) published in The Journal of the American Psychological Association found the most aggressive people were not those with well-founded self-esteem, but narcissists reacting angrily to bad evaluations. It may seem unexplainable that a lack of self-worth could lead to murder. But it has been suggested that some adults and some kids almost starve themselves to death ...
