Technology has always been a crucial industry component, with explosive detection systems (EDS) being developed in the mid-1990s by InVision Technologies, Inc. to protect against potential terrorist threats (Parker, 2005). When InVision was acquired by GE in 2004, improving security in commercial aviation was announced as a major priority (Parker, 2005). GEs technological improvements include airport electronic trace detection portals and systems to identify explosives on passengers and baggage (Parker, 2005). GE has also embarked upon an ambitious technological program that includes such commercial aviation security improvements as biological, nuclear, and radiological detection, system integration, and a powerful antiterrorist tool that combines CT (computerized tomography) with diffraction X-ray screening that improves security through automation efficiency (Parker, 2005). Technology is being used in airlines in improving the processing of passengers, nearly all aspects of which is achieved through automation. Home computers are used to schedule flights, boarding passes are printed out, and airlines now include self-serve kiosks for passengers. The screening of carry-on baggage incorporates a variety of automated screening technologies, including improved capabilities for standoff detection and multiple threat detection (Parker, 2005). Threat resolution can now be accomplished without opening passenger bags by "coupling CT and diffraction-based EDS technologies" (Parker, 2005). Yxlon EDS diffraction X-rays, GE ViewLink, and Passive Threat Resolution Information systems are effective baggage screening applications that can determine baggage contents that set off terminal alarm systems (Parker, 2005).
