Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 5 page paper which
discusses the importance of community in the short stories 'The Lottery,' by Shirley
Jackson, and 'Young Goodman Brown,' by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The argument is
presented that, despite the various conditions of the communities, the communities within
the story offer the characters a place to feel accepted, to one degree or another, and a
place where they know the rules, the boundaries, and the traditions. In this lies a sense of
protection and a feeling of safety, which is why people maintain, and belong to,
communities. Without these communities the stories discussed would cease to be powerful
or intriguing. Bibliography lists 4 additional sources.
