During the Renaissance artists were trained and were essentially employed through patrons who hired them, which was important in light of the fact that only large institutions such as the Church possessed art or purchased art. As time went on art became more and more accessible to the average individual and the style of art clearly changed as modernism and abstract arose and artists were clearly no longer only trained individuals, but rather anyone and everyone who was interested or inclined to engage in art. Many an artist, such as Van Gogh, perished in life prior to becoming famous because of this particular element of art in society. Artists have long been known as a suffering, and poor breed, many of them never becoming well known in any art realm. Throughout more recent times art has been heavily reliant on galleries, dealers, and the taste of the wealthy in relationship to whether or not an artist is ever recognized or even offered the opportunity to be recognized. This is a realm of society, around the world, that has greatly changed as the world enters a more technological age, or the age of information. In this new age people can get their artwork online, through their own websites, pay to be put in many different cooperative galleries, and perhaps hope that they become well known. But, this does not mean that the world of art is limited to individual pursuits in terms of being exposed and selling. There are still very powerful art markets driven by galleries and such. These realms of the art world, however, have also made changes as art and society has changed.
