As the Legal Information Institute (LII) of Cornell University Law School points out, a civil right is a privilege that is enforceable and which, if interfered with, creates harm for the individual against whom the interference was directed. Freedoms of speech, press, and assembly, the right to vote, or the right to equality in public places, are all examples of civil rights. Therefore, the history of American civil rights begins with the Revolutionary War and the establishment of the Constitution, which secured these rights for white men. Over the course of the next several centuries, civil rights were expanded to include minorities and women. The first major expansion of civil rights occurred with the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865, which abolished slavery. Up till this point, it was legal to own an individual of the Negro race and Africans were abducted and transported to the Western Hemisphere for this purpose. The United States fought a long and bloody Civil War to settle the question of slaverys legality and the Thirteenth Amendment abolished this horrendous institution, but it did not give the freed slaves equality with whites under the law. Subsequently, the Civil Rights Act of 1866 granted "all persons," regardless of race, "the full and equal benefit of al laws" ("A Short History"). This legislation was followed by the Fourteenth Amendment of 1868, which granted all citizens protection under the law as part of their constitutional rights. During the Reconstruction era when ...
